Our Favorite Flower Tools

We’re doing a round up of our favorite flower tools!

If you bump into us at a wedding setup you’ll find all of the following items stuffed into our apron pockets! This list is a great guide for the budding floral designer who’s starting to experiment at home, or maybe for the wedding planner who’s looking to cover all their bases in their day-of emergency kit.

All floral designers develop their own preferences and techniques over time, so what is a must-have item for one florist, another might never use! However, we feel this is a comprehensive list of the must-haves to get you through any floral design situation. We will be referencing back to this list many times as we share flower tutorials and design tips!

CLIPPERS

You will always use garden sheers, clippers or a knife to cut a fresh angle on your stems. We love the snips pictured above, which we found in the garden section of our local hardware store!

We are obsessed with the rubber handgrip that makes it so easy to squeeze, and the extra sharp blades that have a precise tip for a very clean cut. But I think our favorite part is the small clasp to keep them from popping open in your apron pocket (since we always seem to lose that protective rubber tip)!

SPOOL WIRE

If we have a spool of wire, we can do virtually anything. Truly!

Spool wire is a must have in your tool kit. Most often we use wire to reinforce soft-stemmed blooms that need to stand upright, to attach floral pieces to standing structures, and to bind lush greenery garlands together without them falling apart. The wire comes in various gauges which measures thickness and strength of the wire. We use 20-24 gauge wire for most of our projects!

CRINKLE WIRE

The technical name is bullion wire but we call it crinkle wire for its texture. It is this very texture that makes it so special. The crinkling allows glue to adhere better and strengthens the bind when wrapping. It’s delicate and flexible nature makes it great for floral jewelry, flower crowns, and more intricate pieces.

WATERPROOF TAPE

A great tool to have at home, this waterproof tape allows us to design in almost any container and is especially helpful when designing in a wide- mouthed vase. Use the tape to secure a block of floral foam in a vase, or create a grid over your vase to help guide your design and keep your stems in place.

FLORAL GLUE

Our best friend when doing corsages of floral crowns. It is our favorite, seamless way to attach blooms and textures to your wearable designs!
