How to Host a Holiday Cookie Decorating Party

There are so many ways to celebrate throughout the holidays and every year we look forward to the tradition of baking cookies together! We think this would be a wonderful way to gather with some of your favorite people. Creating pretty and delicious cookies can be a relaxing way to spend time together & catchup! And at the end of the party you have lots of gifts for neighbors, family & friends- or keep them for yourself :)

We’re going to walk you through everything you need to organize your own cookie decorating party!

what you’ll need

-A couple dozen sugar cookies or gingerbread men (you can make these in advance if you’re a baker or you can buy the pre-cut, pre-baked cookies at your local store!)

-Assortment of sprinkles..here are a few of our favorites!

  • cinnamon imperial sprinkles (or red hot sprinkles)

  • star shaped sprinkles

  • candy cane shaped sprinkles

  • edible glitter in various colors

  • gold beads

  • red, white, green & blue sprinkles!

-powdered sugar and a sifter

-a couple colors of royal icing (see recipe we use here!)

-pastry bags with various metal tips

-metal catch-all trays for easy cleanup

-decorative boxes along with parchment paper or tissue paper

-decorative or disposable plates with cellophane bags or plastic wrap

-holiday ribbons and gift tags

the setup

Gather around the table together with a nice spread of cookies, icing and fixings! At each guests seat, place a cookie tray and tea towel or napkin stack so they’re ready to decorate. Have everyone grab a festive beverage and don’t forget the holiday tunes!

We used lots of small bowls for all the sprinkle options, and we made sure each side of the table has access to all the various kinds so it’s less passing and waiting for a topping you want! Use large plate and tiered trays for easy access to all the undecorated cookies. Pre-fill some of the piping bags with icing but also use larger, shallow bowls of icing for easy dipping!

In another area or side table, have your decorative boxes or cookie plates ready for each guest to tray their cookies to take home. Display the parchment paper, tissue paper, cellophane bags, gift tags and ribbon so your creations are ready to gift!
