Since becoming florists we often run into the assumption that we grow gardens full of colorful blooms. While our grandmothers were both incredible gardeners, we didn’t quite inherit the green thumb. We try!! But sadly, more times than not, anything that comes to the cottage in a pot shrivels up and dies on our watch. Give us a box of cut flowers though, and watch us goooo!

The basement studio space is finally complete! Back in Basement Redo: Part 1 we showed you everything we did during the slow months of 2020. We needed to create a space that was uber organized for our inventory manager, Char, to get through our wedding weeks and make it seamless for our freelancers to come in and feel comfortable with labeled and easily accessible supplies! Not only did we want the space to be organized, but we really wanted the curated aesthetic of our upstairs to make its way to the downstairs. Being surrounded by a beautiful, clean and organized space really helps to keep our minds clear for the creativity to flow :) See what we did with all the before and afters below!

The Flower Cottage basement has been just that…a basement! It’s our workspace, the place we spend most of our time, where all the inventory lives and where all the flower magic happens. But when we first moved in we were so focused on our client experience and making the upstairs beautiful, we never imagined our clients seeing our basement. So we put a fresh coat of paint on the walls and floors and did the best we could to organize with what we had.

We have always said The Cottage is a magical place. And much to our delight everyone who comes through our doors quickly feels it too. We’ve cultivated a community of flower lovers, master hosts, intentional designers and just down-right kind, supportive people over the past few years in this magical space. We never thought we’d have a flower studio down the road from our high school stomping grounds- but here we are & we pinch ourselves on the daily that this is our gig. We’ve been feeling gushy and nostalgic since celebrating our 4 year anniversary of moving out of our mom’s basement (thanks mom!!!!) and into our dream studio space.

In case we haven’t met, we’re Julie & Bethany, 2 sisters who started a biz flowering weddings called Sapphire & Lace Design. For the past 8 years we’ve spent April-December elbow deep in beautiful blooms designing for our wonderful wedding clients. You’ll find us on the weekends driving U-haul vans around the Pittsburgh area setting up some truly stunning events!
When we’re not designing weddings we’re hanging out at our studio space, The Cottage, where we meet with clients and host workshops or private events.
